Deer Stalking… reliable word of mouth recommendation from someone you know has undertaken such stalking being offered by a specific syndicate is best. Like other walks of life, stalking has its scammers. E.G., make sure there is deer, of the species sought, on the land being made available; that appropriate insurance is in place; that there is recourse for recompense if it all goes wrong. In addition, obtain and understand terms and conditions; consider the implications of allowing a syndicate leader to be a FAC mentor; make sure ‘coaches’ are suitably qualified; consider the quality of deer management, the construction & execution of a shooting plan and safety; determine if the land is over-shot.

If in doubt, contact BASC or similar.

Boar

#1 Post by zzr1100 »

A mate of mine is just back from hunting in Croatia ,,,
Yesterday a driven boar coming right at him took three rounds to the chest and kept coming before finally dropping to a headshot at v.close range ,,, from a .308 !
Scary s*** !

He's now contemplating another rifle ! .375 etc ,,,
In the words of Robert Ruark ,,,, "Use enough gun" !

One of our local shooters hunts wild boar abroad and uses a Beretta 301 with a shortened barrel and slugs and he told me once that even that was not always up to the job with the first shot.

my mate has said one option he is considering is a 9.7 x74r / 12g combo ,,,, kinda make sense i guess ,,,, rifle for a bit of distance then a load of SG in the other barrel if the pig gets too close !!

I have shot boar in Croatia for many years now . I stared with a 5shot semi auto 12bore and slugs then a Browning underlever BLR 81 in .308 with 180grs round nose bullets and then for the last couple of year i moved up to a .444 marlin and 265gr Hornadys .Big is better as they say when it comes to wild boar and remember to keep shooting till they stop running !!!.

No, I mean face it and off it.

308win rifle and hot 44mag on my hip, it would be gone.

Ah right! Oooh yes I can do that as can the Viking ;)

.308 is one thing, not sure about the .44 though, I haven't shot pistol in over 12 months now although last time out I got through maybe 750 rounds it was mostly 9mm and I worry about the stopping power of a 9mm against a deeply unhappy wild boar. Having said that I know I can hit a dinner plate 25/25 with a 9mm at 25m so I guess it would be a start :?
