Mauser ZF41 "SS" marked

This is for sale on gunstar, was reserved, but then potential buyer may of done their research before parting with their hard earned money, lucky for them.

Fresh SS stamps from a kitchen worktop
Fresh renumber from most likely the same origin
Can't really comment too much on the scope, apart from every sus scope is magically a CXN marked one
A closer look, the wood allows in inlet for the mount so a plus.

Nothing against the seller, probably won it at an auction.

Well spotted DB, sad that people will do this to make a quick buck or two at the cost of the originality of the rifle. A practice that is quite common these days and a very good reason to think long and hard about what you are doing.

Yeah, sadly even in my own collection I am looking at some fresh looking numbers in places (not by me!)

The fact this rifle has the wood inletted (for the original mount) means it has some originality.
The repro and copy mounts sit above the wood line so that one can mount on a K98 rifle without modding the stock.

My thoughts exactly. Who pays that kind of money for a ruined firearm?
It'd be sadder if it wasn't faked. Still, well spotted and Caveat Emptor and all that..

Not sure I agree with the deactivated and nothing of value lost as once upon a time it would have been a live fire rifle. If nothing else it has sent me down to the workshop to take a closer look at my M1930.

Many years ago there was a dealer who would supply any Luger part you wanted with a part serial number that you wanted .
He could also supply "genuine" tool kits and "genuine" cleaning rods .

The rods and tools were aged by leaving them in the toilet outflow for a few months !

The numbers he would stamp were almost as good as the original mainly because he had several boxes of really genuine pre 1st war German number and letter stamps .

He would buy any Luger , no matter how bad at Weller & Dufty's just to get the parts .

I wonder how many Americans still have his "matching number" Lugers .

Ha, it is not just 'Many years ago' either. I can think of a few who do similar these days, some are open and some less so. If I need parts I have a couple of people I go to and I know they are original and not messed around with.

Er, not excusing such behaviour, but HOW do you think that the original "in service" field workshop repairs were carried out?

Damaged/missing parts would be replaced from stocks of new parts, most of which would require a certain amount of hand fitting to match the gun.
After this hand fitting was carried out, the part would then be stamped with the last 3 digits of the parent gun to prevent mix up in use...

I see a lot of blokes at the shows in Finland & Sweden going through identical boxes of stamped gun parts to look for the "last 3" numbered sling swivel or ejector or firing pin. No harm done & makes for a cheap day out for them!


The MAIN issue to me with this Zf41 sighted rifle is the dealer mis-nomer of "SNIPER RIFLE".
Issue of the Zf.41 was on a "unit marksman" level - as in the CO would see who the better shots in the unit were & given them the option of using the small scope if they wanted. NO extra specialist training, NO "sniper" qualification...
