As the subject, I *need* a machete, nothing pretty or Tactical/Zombie just something with a decent heft and will hold an edge, carbon steel would be my preference.

Thoughts anyone?

Been supplying the British Army golok for decades.
Got one dated late 50's that was lost outside for a couple of winters.
A rub down of the steel, some oil on the grips & good as new.

Beware of the Chinese fake copies.
Marketed as genuine but outright fakes. Easy to spot as normally sold in SA80 bayonet scabbards.
A much shorter blade than the Martindale version.

I saw a really nice one recently, and old boy showed me it, not for sale unfortunately, but they are available.

The martindale ones are much better than the G10 tree slapper I was issued with!

I've been using one of these in the garden (I call it a garden, it's actually a field I bought and incorporated into the garden) and it's been great for general clearing of nettles, bushes and such for not much money. Had several years use and still sharp and going strong. No complaints.

For undergrowth work, slashing coppicing and the like then I use one of my billhooks. Made for the job. I got all mine second decades ago and they serve me well.

A billhook would be a nice option but they can get spendy.
Bulldog tools are a good firm for such kit.

Mine were shillings.

A woodman's pal is the best I have used, nice curved hook on the back of the blade too.
