GSG are making a replica MP40 for release next year, looks nice but expectations are it will come with plastic mags, depends on the build quality as to whether they come to the UK.

Yeah, I saw the prototype of that in Gun Mart a year or so ago, I was salivating as I read the article. It will need to have the stock fixed before it will be UK legal, which will kind of ruin it.

Kind of related - any ideas why more WWII rep's aren't out there in .22lr, surely there would be a considerable market for a Thompson, a Sten, a PPSh41 (not that puma? offering that's out there)

Will the MP40 have a fake mod on it or is it long enough?

I'm sure that I've heard somewhere about a silenced sten, SOE type, in the offing. I can't think who's told me that though, I may have dreamt it.

Nostalgia is great but what purpose do all these replica guns serve? They are purely for plinking which you can do with any gun. They are somewhat expensive, and invariably made of cheap materials.

I'm not against them as such but from what I can gather, they should be "better" than they actually are. Once you spend a few hundred quid more you are into S&W MP 22/ H&K 416/Spikes/CMMG territory. Now they are all essentially one design but are better made.

Are we dumbing down supply? Discuss? razz

It's purely nostalgia for me Mike, I accept that they may not be as good as the S&W et al, in the same way that a Healey 3000 is probably not as reliable or as good as a BMW Z4, but I still want one!

Plinking is the fun bit of .22 shooting, I'm not really interested in producing tiny groups when I shoot .22, I just wanna keep pressing the trigger til it goes click and if I can do that with a sten, an MP40 or similar, then I'm more than happy to throw a few hundred quid at it.

Hope it (the MP40) doesn't have a fake mod on it, it will be ruined. I think the only way it can be made UK legal is if the folding stock is fixed in the 'open' position. With the stock folded, it will probably come in at around 18". Whether they'll do it or not, I have no idea. Although having said that, my GSG-5SD is still over 24" with the retractable stock retracted, maybe the MP40 would come out at a similar size?

Haven't heard anything about a sten, but I would think that, with the fixed stock on it, it should be over 24" OAL without welding a fake can on it.

As long as the reproduction mp40 is true to size it can have a folding stock as it should be 630mm when folded.

The Sten and MP40 have a 7ish inch barrel and a 10inch ish barrel respectively, so both will need some extension of a kind to reach 12 inches
