15-22 Barrel Paint.

#1 Post by Egg on Leggs1 »

Hi All, I have just managed to remove some of the paint from my barrel whilst removing the flash hider. Will BBQ paint be sufficient for a temporary repare and is there a specific paint for this rifle? TIA.

Rifle barrels are not normally painted they are blued. If you have removed the bluing you will have to re blue the affected area. You can buy gun blue to touch up small areas google it.
I just re read my post it sounds a bit like a riddle shakeshout

I believe Smith & Wesson use something called Armornite which I think is akin to Melonite; a chemical process called ferritic nitrocarburizing. You could probably fake it with a matt black touch up pen from Halfords. If you use a spray can of heat proof paint it'd probably be best to spray a puddle of paint on card and then dab it onto the blemish using a cotton bud.

Unfortunately the barrell spun in the vice jaw adapters, I did have the foresight to wrap the barrel with duct tape but it picked up and exposed the paint. It is not a scratch, more a 3" long by 1/42 wide removal of the coating down to the metal. I will try the paint spray route in a taking one for the team way.

Chop it off, 12" barrels are just as accurate on a 15-22.

At least you didn't spin the barrel in the receiver! (I haven't done that BTW!). I've resprayed my BR99 with BBQ/chimenea paint and it worked fine. That was about a year ago and I need to re-do it again!
