Health and FAC

#1 Post by zzr1100 »

As some of you may know I suffered a minor stroke back in may, the GP said I was ok to drive 1 month after the stroke .. The police finally got the med report from the docs today ...
The FLO phoned me to clarify how I am ... (He had seen me in person when he did the home visit in July) ... Now here is the worrying thing ... He says the decision on if I get turned down on health grounds was up to his superiors ???
Surely if the GP says I can drive I'm ok ..
( all I've been left with is some numbness in places in my left side .. So I've been a lucky boy !!)

Glad to hear your OK and made a good recovery , logically and according to your doctor you are fine but who knows what plod may come up with , just to get a few more guns off the streets . I thought their interest would be someone's mental health , as in are they likely to commit suicide because their health has deteriorated and they cant go on , so we confiscate their guns and leave them to suffer for a few more years , it happened to a member of my club who had MS , for his own safety of course .
Hope they see sense in your case .

Dave,
Thanks for your reply .. The other thing that confuses me is that they've not mentioned taking my shotgun away because of the stroke ....

You may be reading more into this than there actually is.

My understanding of the FAC approval process is that it's not just the FEO / FLO who dictates who gets what etc (or not). It's the Chief Constable who puts his mark on the certificate so doubt he will have some input into the matter as well. Saying that, I guess he'll be leaning heavily on the FEO / FLO's guidance in individual cases but subject to what you've said, I don't really see that you have a lot to worry about. Mental breakdown yes ... but a physical event .. I hardly think so.
I suffered a very serious MI (heart attack) 12 years ago which just knocked me flat so now I'm on a medicinal regime requiring 4 tablets every day and regular health checks. No corrective surgery required which is good but what is even better is that I now have a cupboard full of interesting 'toys' to play with. The FEO /FLO did ask me about it during my initial visit but clearly it wasn't a problem.

Stay positive buddy :good:

didn't mean to say that things might not go well for you , just meaning I don't think you have any thing to worry about as there's not anything different now you have made a recovery . My 2 best shooting buddies have had serious heart problems for many years , one had a ruptured aorta over 10 years ago and now his kidneys are packing up so he's on dialysis , and the other one had a heart attack back in june and had a pacemaker fitted , he cant drive till November so I pick him up each week to take him to the club , not his first HA , so I cant see it being a problem for yourself .

My son got His FAC last year (14 year old) He is registered blind, the interview process was interesting.

The FLO came to see Him and go through the usual process I gave the FLO copies of targets my son had shoot at the gun club.
Later that night the FLO was at the club on the bi yearly check of who is shooting and who is not attending that much.

The FLO asked the club secretary about the targets only to be told that is normal for my son and if He wanted to witness it my son was in shooting at that point in time the FLO accepted the secretary word for it.
A few weeks late a police inspector came out for a chat and went away more confused than He was at the start “How can someone with what he has shoot better than me”

Oh yeah, the "Does he take sugar" attitude... sign01

As a disabled person, currently on 46 prescribed tablets a day ( no spelling mistake!! 46 !!), I find it a bit worrying that so called "normal" folk only see the down side of a disability - I.E., they often only see the difficulties they would have if they "had" said disability. A far better way to describe the situation is "differently abled" - yes there are some things I cannot do, but there are many things I can, and do, do!

Zzr:- with my issues, the FLD weren't bothered about rifles - their opinion being that there are no issues with them, but shotguns, ah well, whole different game....

It took some time, but we arrived at a good compromise, by discussion and agreement, and although it is a bit cliched, I do feel that they looked at the issues very sensibly. Quite refreshing actually!! :good:

I have mention the "restrictions" in PM's to a few on here, and if you want any more info... PM me!!
