Gunsmiths who can repair a flintlock

#1 Post by Springfieldm6 »

Hello
I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction - our club has a Pedersoli Frontier .45 flintlock rifle. It does not spark well, and I have read on the web that they did not harden the frizzen sufficiently on some rifles. I've contacted Kranks and they were as helpful as usual - not very. Does anyone know of a gunsmith who might be able to effect a repair?
Regards

If it's a hardening issue, reheat it & oil quench it?

It needs to be heated for a few hours buried in a carbon filled container, also whether it is surface hardened or through hardened informs the treatment.

I did one a few weeks ago, I used the wife's temp controlled kiln with some charcoal and kasenite it the crucible as that is what I had to hand so not too much of a problem. Quenching the lot afterwards holds your attention.

I think it could be a bit of a feck on if you don't have a temp controlled heat source, I find these colour instructions a bit vague for the occasional heat treater, its bright orange in this case, makes a change from cherry red.

Derbyshire arms do a frizzen hardening service, don't know anything about them though, seemingly precious few other people do either.

Was that to harden a frizzen or to colour case harden some parts?
