Deer Stalking… reliable word of mouth recommendation from someone you know has undertaken such stalking being offered by a specific syndicate is best. Like other walks of life, stalking has its scammers. E.G., make sure there is deer, of the species sought, on the land being made available; that appropriate insurance is in place; that there is recourse for recompense if it all goes wrong. In addition, obtain and understand terms and conditions; consider the implications of allowing a syndicate leader to be a FAC mentor; make sure ‘coaches’ are suitably qualified; consider the quality of deer management, the construction & execution of a shooting plan and safety; determine if the land is over-shot.

If in doubt, contact BASC or similar.

UK Biltong

#1 Post by Ovenpaa »

Can anyone recommend a UK based supplier of Biltong and as importantly what to go for? I will eat it when I get the chance however I seldom have any idea what variant it is so some pointers as to what is good and where to source would be handy.

Original flavour biltong is still the best, buy it by the stick and slice it off with a knife as you eat, just not in public...

The peri-peri droewors is superb too, ideal to eat as you're busy over the grill with the sosaties and tjops.

I buy mine from BiltongDirect. I am no expert but I like their products especially the droewors sausage. Prices are ok and express delivery . In addition to some classic French saucisson sec, we now usually nibble on their biltong when we have friends at home for an aperitif.

I pass the place regularly going shooting and travelling home to Scotland. I have called in and bought their products, I can highly recommend their Jerky. Never tried their Biltong but will do on the next visit.

Biltong...yes I know about this!

Jumbo importers at the Arches in London do a unique flavour of biltong: rosemary and olive. It isn't on their website but I have spent many pounds on that biltong in person.

https://www.southafricanshop.co.uk/stor ... egory/2192

They do a loyalty card scheme also: ten purchases of £20 or more, will get you a discount on the 11th purchase (10% of the total you spent before, will be reduced from your next spend).

That shop also has several "essential" items such as Ouma rusks, Peppermint Crisp slabs and Cremora.

They have seen me many times!

One word of warning: they have started selling ostrich biltong recently and they haven't quite got the recipe right yet. I would avoid that until they get in the groove.

Their chilli droe wors is good, as are the "bites"

But for sliced biltong the rosemary and olive cannot be beaten!
