Pork Chops Anyone?

Member of the White Oak Ranch Hunting Club in Bertie County, N.C., had been gunning for a huge wild boar since first spotting it earlier this year. Last month, Conetoe hunter Jett Webb managed to bag the big pig during a night-hunting session Feb 28. It was evidently quite a haul.

"I told my buddy, I said, 'Corey, we've got to get a 4-wheeler in here or there's no way we're getting this pig out.' He obviously agreed," Webb told WITN.

Photos of the 8-foot, 500-pound boar have since become a media sensation.

"It was very surreal," Webb told WNCT. "It was a shock. It was very humbling to say the least, when you walk up on a beast that big and you say, 'Oh my gosh.' I had no idea that there could be something that big running around the woods of Eastern North Carolina."

Webb, a veteran hunter, killed the huge hog with a single shot from his .308 caliber rifle. While some of his other big kills were mounted as trophies at the hunting club, this time, Webb chose to harvest the meat from the boar.

"We're not going to waste anything," Webb told WNCT. "So that pig will provide food for me and my family for a good year."

Mike Mansell, president of the White Oak Ranch Hunting Club, told CBS News that while boars this size we out of the ordinary, the wild pig population has been on the rise recently.

"They're a species that is invasive," Mansell said. "Once you have them, you're not going to get rid of them. They just continue to multiply."

Wow that's some beast!

Part of me thinks it's a shame such a magnificent thing is no longer out in the wild, but I wouldn't knock the guy...I'm sure if you were a hunter out there it'd be an irresistible prize...

...not to mention a years worth of chops, sausages, hams and bacon tongueout

.308 ??? I would prefer something like a .458 !!

Doesn't matter how big it is, a properly placed shot will kill it just as dead.

A mate of mine put three in the chest of a Croatian boar (with a .308) and then finally dropped it at very close range with a headshot at scary close range .. The 1st round killed it ... It just didn't know it yet ! As Robert Ruark said .."use enough gun" !

Over the years I've used everything from .25 calibre to .444 calibre. I've always gone for head shots just behind the ear, if I couldn't get that shot I haven't fired. Every hog I have ever shot has dropped dead on the spot. Big calibres are great if you don't mind meat wastage IMHO, each to their own I guess but the story and photo is proof enough that a well place shot with a .308 will do the job.

Also I tend to think that hog hunting here and in Europe differ in that over in Europe, the hogs are driven into the shooters in a lot of cases. Here we tend to hunt them quietly, shoot them when they are relaxed and feeding.

I hope its a sow because an un-castrated boar of that size could be a bit ripe on the taste buds!
I tried some from a much smaller male in Bavaria a few years back and just couldnt eat it-smell was a bit ripe as well. The meat from a smaller sow was the dogs danglies :good:

I would welcome the chance to go after one a quarter that size for less than the silly money that is asked in this country!

I think I will stick to Muntjac, at least you can sling a couple in the back of the car and they are superb eating.

Aw hell mate when hunting pigs I tend to go after the porkers in the 100 - 150lb range. Fit them in a car boot no problem and like venison, tastes delicious ;)
