Up loading Avatar

Not new to this forum but would like instructions to up load an Avatar from my computer. When in the user control panel and trying to update Avatar, what are the next steps, please.
Is an Avatar a photo or a symbol?

Hi Cherokee, the easiest way is to upload your desired photo to Photobucket (you'll need to create a free account) and then edit it to the correct size in Photobucket then click on the second box sown under your resized photo to copy it to your clipboard.
Go into your profile and choose to upload an avatar and then just paste the link in there.
Should work fine.
