I have a Katadyn pocket, while I was straining filthy river water through my socks some others had one of these back in the 80s, always swore when I had the money I'd get one.
Now just to take it to Africa to test it.

I have used MSR and Katadyn - both work well. Another item I recommend is a UV light for use after you have filtered the water - kills any remaining pathogens. I have the Steripen Adventurer, but there are a half-dozen different models to choose from. Between the two - should make any natural water you find relatively safe.
