.577 Pattern 1853 or First Model Percussion ArtilleryCarbine

#1 Post by triton339 »

I will soon be taking delivery of the above rifle .
A reduced powder charge ( Pyrodex ) from the full length rifle I gather .
Can anyone give me a powder charge to start with and any other info that might be useful .
Regards .

I don't use Pyrodex because of the corrosion risk and it is much more expensive than proper black powder. 50 grains should be a good starting load. For short range work, I prefer the Lee trash can bullet---the mould is cheap and they are easily lubed by dipping in Wonderlube which has been melted in the micro wave.

Thanks for that Fred .
Will google the trash can round .
I would prefer black powder but getting hold of it is difficult , I will ask about at the range .
