Explosives Licence for Pyrodex

#1 Post by Lever357 »

Has anybody heard of a change to the regs stating that you must have an explosives licence for Pyrodex now????

A friend of mine who is an RFD was at Kranks today and tried to buy a tub of Pyrodex for me. They refused to sell it to him as he does not hold an explosives licence and they stated the regs had changed in March.

I will contact my firearms licensing office this week to clarify.

Pyrodex is actually black powder (HD 1.1), desensitised to allow it to be marketed as propellant in HD 1.3. It is possible that they decided to look at its chemical composition (which is that of gunpowder) and label it as an explosive not a propellant. That would justify requiring an explosives licence. I think it is daft, but then it is the government, so daft seems acceptable.

Having just checked the Krank's website, there is nothing to suggest the change of requirement for an explosives license and none of the other websites which I view regularly are carrying it.
Bearing in mind that this is a fairly important change for some people, I would have thought that it would be highlighted somewhere among the shooting forums.

Saying that, it may have been sneaked in but I can't help but think that the government has enough going on at the moment without concerning itself with stuff like this.

CDSG are showing Pyrodex in stock on their website.

It might be worth giving them a call to see if they will sell it without an explosives licence.

My dad was once refused shotgun primers he was clearly using for a nitro conversion, then the manager came out and it was sorted so it was likely the employee in question.... Also heard it might be another reason but don't have an definitive proof.

Kranks state on their Pyrodex page:

"we will require your original Explosives Certificate which should list UN0499"

https://www.henrykrank.com/pyrodex-p-1lb-454g.html

It is towards the bottom of the page under Delivery & Returns. It is almost lost in the small print.

On the face of it, Krank’s are wrong.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!
