Hodgdons 4895 and the Ban

#1 Post by nfarmer »

Hi

I'm getting to the end of my stock of H4895 and need to move to a replacement,non-banned, powder.

I'm hoping to get some advice on here from more experienced reloaders! My issue is that I do most of my shooting on a range with muzzle velocity and energy restrictions. When I first started reloading I was advised the H4895 could be loaded to reduced levels as it is the slow burning propellant that ignites uniformly in reduced charges down to 60% of its maximum charge (https://imrpowder.com/wp-content/upload ... -loads.pdf).

I'm looking for recommendations please for a suitable replacement powder.

Thanks in advance (I did do a search before posting but didn't find an answer on here)

Your calibre and bullet weight would help.

It's .223 and either 55gr or 69gr

how slow do you need to go? and what range are you attempting ? reloder7 is very good for .223 and can be reduced although not as far as 60% I fear,

I use 22gns Vit133 with 69gn SMK and it's producing 2840fps which is 1675 joules out the barrel

The range limit is 2150 ft/sec and 1496 ft/lbs, any bullet weight below 150 gn only needs to meet the muzzle velocity. Currently using 20.1 gn of H4895 which gives a velocity just a tad over 2000 ft/sec.

So my target speed is about 2000 ft/sec!

Calling out for cast lead, reloder7 or unique (or one of several other powders) with 55gn bullet will give in the region of 17-1800 fps for between 7 and 12 grains of powder
