Powder coated boolits

#1 Post by dodgyrog »

Does anybody on here use them or make them?
If you do, perhaps you would explain the benefits.
Thanks

Tried them as well as epoxying, found the process a real feck-on and it gave no benefits over proper lubing.

Perhaps could help reduce fouling in a moderator if that is a problem for you, but other than that tumble lubing is a far simpler coating process.

a friend uses them for pistol bullets, he considers it a game changer as far as leading reduction, looks like a real PITA to do though

Proper cast bullets don't lead.

He is treating a symptom with PC not curing the cause.

I did make a batch last year, only one batch after a few failed attempts :bad:

I found the process a chew on, and apart from different coloured boolits in a box, there was no other gain, for me anyway.

Getting the right powder is a must, certain colours don't work. To add complications, not all brands work for powder coating boolits by using a plastic tub.

There is also a potential health hazard as some types of the powder give of toxic fumes when heated.

I never found a UK source of powder that adhered well, all my testing was done with recommended US sourced powders. Even then they performed no better than Xlox based tumble lubes at the same velocities. Accuracy really dropped of as the velocities increased over 1200 fps.

Some PC'ers in the states are starting to get good accuracy at velocity with PC, it needs its own approach and techniques, it is still a messy and a feck on process with its own peculiar sizing/loading needs, just like normal high velocity cast bullet loadings.
