Winchester underlever action slicking

If you are making it or modifying it, repairing it or restoring it, it goes in here.

Winchester underlever action slicking

#1 Post by Alpha1 »

A question is it possible to smooth out a Winchester action. The rifle functions fine but working the lever is really stiff. Especially on cocking the hammer. Can it be stoned or what if any thing can be done.
I am OK with disassembling and reassembling a Winchester. Just looking for some tips on slicking things up.

They definitely can, however the work seems to be eye-wateringly expensive for what they are for some reason. I'm sure when I looked into a trigger kit for one about 5 years ago it was £300+ and that was without installation/fine tuning of the action.

I know you're up this way so if you can speak to Bob Dunkley (of Bob Dunkley Firearms), he'll certainly be able to point you in the right direction.

If you got the coil spring model Wolff do a reduced power hammer spring.

A & A Gunsmiths do a lot of mods for cowboy action shooting so they should be able to sort it.

I've polished everything that moves on my '94 .357. I've also reduced the hammer spring and now use pistol primers, it all works very smoothly and never misfires.

I have worked on quite a few in the past. it is worth machining some dummy pins for the trigger as you may have to reassemble it a few times. I also spotted a box of Wolff springs plus a load of shims on the shelf just the other day, I will dig them out and see what I have.

Alpha, everything has been moved around to fit a new machine in. Once normality has resumed I will post you a set of Wolff springs and selection of shims, I will include the dummy pin dimensions as well so you can make yourself a set.
