How much drop for slug at 100 and 200 yards ?

#1 Post by breacher »

Noticed some guys shooting slug at 100 and 200 yards at The Phoenix.

Meant to ask but never got around to it.

My Vepr 12 is zeroed at 30 yards with Geco Comp Slug. But I dont see any ballistic data / drop tables online to work out how much hold over I would need at 100 and 200 ?

Dont want to re-zero the red dot so if I entered, I would be holding over. Just wondered if the hold over is minimal enough to be feasible - if it is, I might give it a bash next year !

Maybe we could have a word with the Mortar Platoon and see if they have any dial sights spare...

Not that we are advocating shooting slugs you understand. Dashed unsporting pass time in our opinion. They are so slow and make very easy targets...

I know one of the shotguns was sighted in at 25yds with S&B 32g and because of the trajectory, that was also close to the 100yd elevation.

200yds is a different matter as that seems to be more dependent on what slug you use. I never really got a zero for mine at 200yds as I had the misfortune of getting a marker who was unable to put a spotting disc in a 12ga hole!

I can find out someone else's 200yd elevation to give you a starting point but we should really try and organise a proper sighting in session before next year's match!

I shoot with a guy that regularly shoots slug out to 2-300m, i'll try to remember to ask him at the weekend. He does 'roll his own' so he may have specialized ammo to get out that far without having to go to 45 degrees elevation lol

The furthest I've shot it out to is 50m and that took about 6" of elevation on the target. My gun is sighted for 15m and that was the Geco Coated Competition Slug. I use S&B Super Slug Sport now so that'll need to be checked before a similar match in August!

Shooting S&B 32g slug, the winner this time used his 25yd zero at 100yds and came up 12.5 MOA from that for 200yds.

So that gives us all a starting point next time we shoot it!

I had the great idea to try a rifled choke next year as apparently they are now legal, but then I was told they're not allowed in the rules.

Sounds promising - red dot here so can only aim off - 12.5 moa means aiming at top of backing screen then !

Shouldn't be a problem. I'm thinking of doing the same myself next time. You only have to get them all in the black and you'll probably win.
