Deer Stalking… reliable word of mouth recommendation from someone you know has undertaken such stalking being offered by a specific syndicate is best. Like other walks of life, stalking has its scammers. E.G., make sure there is deer, of the species sought, on the land being made available; that appropriate insurance is in place; that there is recourse for recompense if it all goes wrong. In addition, obtain and understand terms and conditions; consider the implications of allowing a syndicate leader to be a FAC mentor; make sure ‘coaches’ are suitably qualified; consider the quality of deer management, the construction & execution of a shooting plan and safety; determine if the land is over-shot.
If in doubt, contact BASC or similar.

No need to kill Deer
Did anyone hear Craven (Countryfile) state the other week that there is no need to kill deer...they are just in the wrong place...FFS...how can anyone take him seriously?
Deer have no natural predator in the UK.
And as for Miz Miriam...well I for one will not miss her.
But the others seem entertaining...Julia Bradbury, Adam Henson, Ellie Harrison, Jules Hudson and James Wong.
But they seem unable to give any serious answers to the questions they raise because the majority of them do not understand nature and business, let alone the notion of conservation.

I would have Julia Bradbury would have been able to put forward soe sort of arguement - afterall, she did "Kill it, Cook it Eat it".

I've long since given up hoping that the BBC would actually form a fair point of view concerning shooting.

John Craven is an anti...so dont expect anything else.
That buffoon Bill Oddie was also the chairman of the league against cruel sports for a while.

Yet these people find their way to power (media) to try their best to bugger it up for the legal shooter...what a country!baldie wrote:John Craven is an anti...so dont expect anything else.

Re: No need to kill Deer
If deer are not managed they can create all sorts of havoc for the local flora, fauna and themselves .
There are some really scary examples from abroad where they were not managed, fenced in, starved to death.
It is important not to have to this Bambi picture in front of you when dealing with deer management.
In fact that goes for all animal management.
A lot of the parks, enclosures, wildlife reserves we have in this country have been man made, therefore it is logical that it needs managing.
Fluffy presenters do not get it. All they see are viewer ratings.

LACS them selves have come under a barrage of criticism regarding deer welfare on their estate, Reds diseased and hungry, poor management coupled with the wrong attitude to adequate control is a recipe for disaster.

Re: No need to kill Deer
There was an article end of year on Deer culling or the lack thereof in Europe, the beasts were dying due to lack of food and the hand wringers were refusing to let anything be done.

It beggers belief, I am part of a Deer Management Group, we try to get our point across, not just for the love of stalking and munching on venison, but for the general good health of deer them selves, these bloody tree huggers have no idea, just mis-guided views and 21st century ideals.

There was a great hoo ha in Dundee last year i think it was over the shooting of a roe buck in an inner city cemetary.Nobody knew how it got there but it was coming up to the age where he might fancy a bit and go wandering looking for it.The old cemetary is very close to busy dual carridgeway and the likelyhood of an accident was very high so the decision was taklen under the advice of the professionals in deer management to cull it.
This was met by the walt disney mob with anger...why not dart it and move it.Despite the police saying this was done humanely and under professional advice it ran for weeks in the local paper. The people who lived close to the cemetary even called it Bambi, how original.
