Deer Stalking… reliable word of mouth recommendation from someone you know has undertaken such stalking being offered by a specific syndicate is best. Like other walks of life, stalking has its scammers. E.G., make sure there is deer, of the species sought, on the land being made available; that appropriate insurance is in place; that there is recourse for recompense if it all goes wrong. In addition, obtain and understand terms and conditions; consider the implications of allowing a syndicate leader to be a FAC mentor; make sure ‘coaches’ are suitably qualified; consider the quality of deer management, the construction & execution of a shooting plan and safety; determine if the land is over-shot.

If in doubt, contact BASC or similar.

On a slightly different subject - Jack the dag has "issues" with floors !

If he arrives at a join between tiles and carpet or tiles and lamibate etc - the join throws him off. He stalls and gingerly crosses as there is a chasm in between !

I can only assume long sighted or "issues" :-)

Dogs likely have better ears than us, could it be the bangs
or one of the bangs at some point coursed phisical pain
and that is why the dog no long likes laud noise?

If out with me, my Labrador sits directly in front of me when I am shooting unless told to get behind and he just sits there like a coiled spring shaking slightly with ears cocked and waiting for the command to 'Get on.' I have often wondered just what it is doing to his ears however he seems absolutely fine with everything.

The season has started now so he will be out picking up at least once or twice a week until the end of January which means exposure to a lot of shots, they are usually 200+ bird days so say 250 shots X 20 days is 5000 loud bangs. Quite a sobering thought as the guns should all be wearing ear protection and even though he is pulled back during the shoot he will still be no more that 40-50m from the guns best case and a lot closer on occasion. Amazing how his ears will cope with that, and his brain come to think of it.

He has one more year after this then he will be completely retired other than the occasional Pigeon shoot or walking gun with me. Judging by the way he has a Lurcher half his age by the throat right now I suspect he will be OK for a while :)
