Looking out the window from the hospital. Noticed this building opposite. Any idea what it could be? Odd shape. Almost like a stairwell. But it doesn't seem to be attached to anything although there is a pathway round it
Any ideas?

That’s the lift block for the adjoining David Smith building - University of Bristol Campus.
As Christel says, it’s the Nuclear Research Centre.

There are many bunkers and such structures around cities connected to either the last war or the cold war.
Some are in really good condition, the MOD and councils sometimes sell them as well.

all I can see on the building beside it is in the brickwork, sick children. is that the david smith building? I assume that means it is basmented, as it isn't attached to the building

Yes and yes. Used to be the Bristol Hospital for Sick Children and Women. Built in 1866 or thereabouts. The building, not the lift block :)bradaz11 wrote:all I can see on the building beside it is in the brickwork, sick children. is that the david smith building? Judging by the planning docs, the lift was a late 70s addition. The hospital used to be a lot bigger but a large amount of it was demolished to make way for more uni buildings. The lift block looks slated for demo as a later phase. The brick and stone David Smith building is listed so that escaped the bulldozers :)Kungfugerbil wrote: Built in 1866 or thereabouts.
