I have often wondered that as well. Both Users and Bots are recorded on the who is on line number however by the start of September numerous filters had been put in place to prevent all apart from people like Google, MSN, Yahoo and similar.
At one point the forum was being viewed by many Bots from China and was seeing dozens of attempted new user sign ups on a daily basis so huge ranges of IP's were blocked as were the majority of the engines (It made a big difference to the forum bandwidth used) but they were al blocked by this date so the easy answer is I have no idea.
The forum does attract a huge amount of foreign guests in the early hours so it could be they were all looking for something that had been mentioned elsewhere.....

You should still have the log file from that date - it will show it on there
