Winchester Model 1895 7.62x54r

Has anyone got, or have experience of, the Winchester Model 1895 that was chambered in 7.62x54r for the Imperial Russian Army?.I quite fancy one for my collection but have no idea how common they are and what sort of value they have.

Pretty rare to find an unbutchered one by all accounts - they're so uncommon that guntrader doesn't have a 7.62 caliber in their search categories for underlever rifles.

Handled one once. Twice the money that the .303 Brit chambered was!!

They are really rare and sought after in the US and when found are expensive, so I'd imagine it to be rarer and more expensive over here. They are pretty cool though and I could see one fitting in your arsenal quite nicely!

If the 54r chambered versions are rarer and more expensive they may be a bit rich for me sadly........might have to be a Mosin sniper instead.

They are very rare and when found tend to be expensive and well used partly because they were very popular with the Russian troops issued with them. Some went to Spain and were refurbished in Spanish arsenals before use in the Spanish civil war. A great source of info on these is the book "Allied Rifle Contracts in America", it also covers the Mosin Nagant, Mauser, Enfield and Berthier contracts.
I'd highly recommend it if you have an interest in WW1 military rifles.

I recently picked up one from auction, but there has been a bit of a cluster over its correct proof, and so it will have to go back to be sorted out.

This one is in beautiful mint condition, but is a sportered version of the military rifle.

The reason it is mint (inc bore) becomes apparent when you look down the bore. It was proofed recently as 7.62x54R; however, when you look at the bore, its immediately apparent that it is a great deal larger than 7.62mm! Its calibre is currently unknown, but I suspect that it is in fact 9.3x53 Finnish. This was/is a Scandinavian hunting round derived from the 7.62x54R.

There is one in the Uk, it was in the Holts auction catalogue for a few sale in a row, however it had a cracked stock and the sights were incorrect.

It was proofed in 2016 so I'm guessing it was a recent import.

There was a run of modern Japanese made 'Browning' 1895s some (10? 15?) years ago made primarily for the US market. I imagine they were in .30-06, .30-40 and maybe .405 as they are the chamberings most Americans want. Whether any made it here I can't say, but would expect the old Winchester / Browning importer BWM Arms to have tried to snag a few.
