Modern German, I believe it is also the Germans that stamp "7.62 RUSS" on them
Yes modern German proof the chicken above the N is a nitro proof mark started in 1952 (Ulm) the square relates to the area the rifle was proofed in Mellrighstadt,. See here http://www.mdwguns.com/cip.html scroll down to see pictures of stamps.

When I got my M44 I thought the bird was an eagle and N stood for Nazi I.e German captured rifle from the hands of a dead Russian ...... What a numpty
