Couple of Lee Enfield questions

I would check thoroughly that it hasn't been barrelled if you are seeking a complete original rifle especially as such things so far from the dates of manufacture are extremely rare beasts if not almost extinct by now.

That's a very fair point and it may be that it's been re-barrelled but the important thing for me is that everything which has a serial number matches up (which it does) and that it's not been modified from its original spec. If it really is the original barrel, that's a bonus

Turns out is really is an early Maltby production No 4 Mk 1. All the numbers match up and it has a very good, 2-groove bore. Totally unmodified from it's original spec. A deal has been done and I await my variation. Very pleased indeed.

Well, a numbers matching, original barrel that's not shot out Mk.1 that hasn't been through FTR at some point is a very rare find, and a Matlby made one at that is a super rare find........and very collectible.

The chap selling it has kindly taken the wood off this evening and has onfirmed barrel number is the same as everything else. Happy days. It looked immaculate through the bore. I will report on how it shoots in due course.
