Mosin Nagant HEX receiver fitted with PU scope.

#1 Post by Mauserbill »

Hello
Very unusual picture of a rifle somebody seems to have fitted a PU side mount to a HEX receiver Mosina.
I thought that it was not possible for this conversion on a low wall scalloped receiver, but it appears that somebody has been able to complete it. Not sure about this, but maybe a Mosina aficionado can enlighten me. Were there ever any HEX receivers produced or converted by the Russians or Finns with PU side mounted scope systems.

Short answer is no, all PU snipers had round receivers.

All original Mosin PU sniper rifles were built specifically as sniper rifles, rather than particularly accurate infantry rifles fitted with a scope and were produced in alpha prefixed batches and Factory No. 536 Tula and Factory No. 74 Izhevsk both produced the PU sniper from 1942 to 1944. There were no PU snipers produced during WWII outside of these three years.

By 1942 the hex receiver had long been replaced by the round receiver and all original PU snipers were produced with high wall round receivers only, any PU with a low wall is a reproduction/fake.

Genuine Finnish-captured PU snipers are a rare bird as more often than not the Finnish soldier that did capture one would spirit it away more often than not to use as a hunting rifle later on.The Finnish military figures for captured PU rifles is very low considering the numbers that could have actually been captured. It is also worth noting that it was standard practice for Russian snipers to destroy their scopes in the event of impending capture by enemy troops.

The only original hex receiver Mosin snipers you will find are those with a PE scope in a Smirnsky top mount, if I remember correct these were produced from '33 to '38 and the PE was replaced by the PEM in '37, with the switch to the PEM side mount in '38.All PEM snipers with a side mount were built on high wall receivers.
