Historic Marlin 1889

#1 Post by Bryan Austin »

For those that have an interest in older pre-1945 lever action rifles....

This rifle has been in the family for a little over 54 years. I have hunted with it several times when I was a kid. I moved up to the 30-30 (also in the family for over 54 years) but have reverted back to the mid-range dash calibers.

This is is chambered for the 44-40.

The sling has always been on it an appears to use the old black powder shotgun sling "swivels". The forward attachment is soldiered to the barrel. I took the old sling and used it as a pattern to make a new one, using the original parts. I wanted it brown but the leathersmith made it black.

It shoots just fine with smokeless or black powder load

I'm an addict for old Marlins! And that is a very nice 1889. I have a dozen or so 1894s, a couple of 1892s an 1893 and an 1897. But a decent 1889 has alluded me!

My favourite is a first year production 1894 in .32-20, followed closely by a 1903 vintage .38-40 carbine.

I have a 98% finish 1901 vintage, 1894 in 25-20 with a 28" barrel. It is stunning!
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!
