1897 Tula M91 Mosin preservation project

#1 Post by snayperskaya »

Just before Christmas I spotted a 1897 Tula M91 Mosin on Guntrader that was in a very sorry state. The seller said he was open to offers so I thought it would be rude not to make an offer which was subsequently accepted and it was transferred to my RFD.Early on the rifle was christened Old Rusty......

Due to the Covid situation I wasn’t able to collect it until last Thursday and since then it has undergone a bit of a transformation. It was missing the cleaning rod and handguard but these were sourced from a contact in Sweden.

I have tried to post the pictures of the restoration/preservation but haven’t had much luck due to the size and I haven’t time to resize them at the moment so instead the link below is to a thread I started on the Gunboards Mosin Collectors Forum which has plenty of before and after photos and additional info......please have a look and let me know what you think :good:

Thank you mate :good:

The bronze wool I used, in conjunction with lashings of penetrating oil and Ballistol, did a great job of removing the rust without scratching the metalwork like steel wool can

I was really surprised to see that even after 124 years and more than a bit of rust there is still remnants of paint in the markings on the underside of the rear sight leaf!.I was also pleasantly surprised at the amount of original blueing that was still on the receiver and barrel under the wood line.
