I received it. Seems a bit abrupt to suggest that all members must email to keep their account. surely posting shows that they want to continue to engage with the forum.

I would prefer not to be deleted...

TG,

Unfortunately the higher powers who have dreamed this GDPR up insist that consent must be given, actively given.

It is one of many regulations that protects the individual and makes life incredibly complicated for many.

The way I understand it, it should only affect how the company uses your info, ie in marketing etc, not our membership of a forum (because by signing up we have already expressly given our consent to receive the forum pages).

A great point of the new regulations is I should now stop getting GDPR emails!

It's not about whether the site owners use the data for marketing or not. As soon as they collect any data on an EU resident, whether it was an email address or IP address, they fall under the GDPR.
Even if they have no intention on using the data for marketing, they have to advise the user what data they hold and for what purpose. It also applies to tracking (things like Google analytics embedded in web-pages).
If you ever chose to leave the board you could also demand that the site owner delete every trace of your data from their database.
You can also demand from the site owners a copy of the data they hold on you at any time.
