New member from the Garden of England (Kent, that is!).

#1 Post by Lyonesse »

Hi there,

Many thanks for the add.
Like many, I'm sure, I was an active shooter in handgun days (Dan Wesson 15H .38/.357 with 2" and 6" barrels; S & W Model 629 .44 Magnum/Special with 8 3/8ths barrel; and a beautiful Colt 1911 that I had just had tricked up before handing it in to become razor blades!).
I then sulked for about 20 years, including living abroad and trying reasonably successfully and enjoyably, recurve archery. I yearned to squeeze a trigger again though and bought a very nice BSA PCP air rifle, but after a few years my club folded. I tried to sell the rifle through GunTrader to a complete time waster, and in frustration thought 'sod it, I'll join a small bore club' to use it there.
Best thing I have done in a long time. Much as I liked the BSA, I soon sold it to fund the purchase of a Ruger 10/22, nicely set up with a Hogue stock, ER Shaw barrel, and a Volquaertsen trigger. I put a Sightron scope on it and enjoy plinking and competition at Hildenborough Rifle and Pistol Club. I have also completed the NRA standard and advanced Gallery Rifle courses with the intention of getting stuck into some events this year at Bisley and elsewhere. That is on hold at the moment!
The club shoots 300 and 600 yds on the Century ranges and I've found a lovely Tikka M590 in .223. It must be over 25 years old but has a replacement stainless steel barrel and a trigger job. I've put a Vortex Viper 4-16x50 HS scope on it and love the combination. It's much better than I am!
As frustrating as this current hiatus is, I have an Uberti 1873 Special Sporting rifle with 24 1/4 octagonal barrel in 44-40 waiting for me when this hopefully all blows over. Can't wait to pick it up and to get back into reloading again, which I really enjoyed for my handguns.
Thanks for sticking with this wittering for so long...
