But if you are either a serving or retired officer then different criteria come into play, do they not...?

Yes a lot of X police army prison officers politicians and their minders would have access to PPWs, including politicians that have served time for terrorist offences. Something someone from GB would see as strange here is individuals loading their handguns before leaving the range for going home.

Lost his RFD for having a loaded gun in the shop, and I believe the shop closed soon after. Still, every cloud, etc..........

Had he not been so naive he might have claimed he picked up a dropped round from the floor and popped it into the chamber. I expect at the time he thought the police would be grateful that he'd prevented some thug making off with firearms intended to be used against them.
