One Ranger

#1 Post by Lever357 »

Saw a review of this book many years ago on Guns and Ammo website, thought it sounded interesting and managed to source through Amazon - "One Ranger" by Joaquin Jackson. Jackson served as a Texas Ranger from 1966 to 1993, patrolling vast swathes of territory alone. He was once asked why he always carried a .45ACP to which he replied "Because Colt never made a .46!"

There is an interesting section on the firearms he carried through out his career, especially as when it came to "weapons I was cursed with a wandering eye!" (arent we all!!).
In 1966 he was issued with S&W Model 19 .357 revolver but quickly changed to a .45acp Colt Commander.
This was carried with a full clip and two spare clips on his belt.
He was also issued a Remington Model 8 .30 semi automatic rifle but replaced it when funds allowed with a Winchester Model 94 .30-30 with a barrel cut down to 16.25 inches. This was kept in an old saddle scabbard in the footwell of his police car. A bandolier with 40 rounds in was close by plus a few hundred rounds kept in the trunk of the car.
A Remington 1100 12 gauge with 21 inch barrel was his shotgun of choice with plenty of 00 and 000 buckshot in the trunk along with 600 grain slugs.
A .380 semiauto and a .22 magnum revolver were usually hidden as well in his boot and or shirt.
Auto weapons started with the M2 .30 carbine and went through M14s, Thompsons, M16s and Ruger Mini 14 before he settled on the Armalite AR-18 - kept with 4 30 round magazines close by and a few cases of .223 in the trunk.
The rest of the trunk space was taken up with C rations, coffee pot, bed roll, water canteens, first aid kit, camera and an investigators kit. Mo wonder they had such large cars.

It's a good read if you like Americana and tales of the west.
Remember, we're all here because we're not all there!

Bill Jordan was the main push behind S&W developing the medium K frame .357 revolver, the model 19.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!
