£900 for a Mossie M44 ???

#1 Post by Dark Skies »

Part of me is really rather surprised at the price, whilst undoubtedly in beautiful condition, it's a Mossie M44.
Part of me is rather avariciously excited as I have one in equally lovely condition that I bought for £200 six years back - unfired.

Is this just wildly optimistic or has the 'umble Mossie carbine risen in value whilst I've been focussing on BP revolvers and Western under levers?

I note a lot of other variants a lot pricier than I imagined whilst mooching about on Guntrader too.

Not that long ago a dealer gave me an M44 that he just couldn't shift.
The other, as above, I purchased for peanuts. It was made in Poland during one of the 'sweet' years for best quality.

I hope one lives near me if I should consider selling. :)

Crikey, I remember when they were seventy quid in the shops and a quarter of that at auction and it is not so many years ago. FRS used to sell 180 grain (Heavy ball) Bulgarian for GBP12.00/100 which I thought was expensive at the time. That was certainly less than 10 years ago.

£900 is very optimistic indeed in my humble opinion and too much for a M44*, for that money you're getting into genuine PU sniper territory. That said Mosin prices in general have been climbing, partly due to the arms embargo against Russia and the situation in Ukraine as these were the main sources of Arsenal-stored Mosin stockpiles.

*If it was a 1953 Romanian M44 with matching numbers it would be worth near that price as they are very rare, but that is from a collectors standpoint rather than someone that wants an M44 purely to shoot.

There are also a few other Mosin carbine variants out there including the M1907 and the very rare St Petersburg Cavalry carbine.....if you weren't really into Mosins you'd think they were run of the mill carbines and be none the wiser to how rare they are, especially one with a "ka3" stamp on the barrel shank!.

I knew the one I was given to be Romanian. I went to check the date of manufacture and discovered ... 1953!
All the serial numbers match too. It's in really good nick. Even has the correct cleaning rod with it.

Looks like I may have lucked out then.

Six years ago I bought 2 Russian Tula made all matching Mosin's a M44 & M38 Both for £400

Two years ago while on the range a chap offered me £500 for each one so a profit wow. thankssign

Last year I bought an Immaculate all matching Polish M44 for £300 as I missed the Mosin fireball when using Russian milsurp ammo. The same dealer has just sold another Polish one for £325.

Russian Mosin's have been going up in price over recent years. 91/30's seem to be in a ball park price range of £500-600.
