Home Range 25m

#1 Post by qws »

I live on a farm, and wanted to have a small practice range on the land for my own personal use. 25m only. Do I need any form of permission to build this.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Are you allowed by virtue of your license to shoot over your land?

Then you should be OK to dump some soil/sand as part of your farming business and then when you need to zero use that.

If you want something more permanent or much larger you will most likely need planning. We got permission to build a shooting layout, clays and rifle butt, and as we are in the middle of nowhere there was no issue with it. I doubt anyone would have noticed or complained if we did it occasionally as a zero anyway but with the increased shooting due to shotgun coaching we thought it would be prudent to get permission.

You can zero on land over which you have permission to shoot, how much zeroing you need - only you can tell.

However if you build a full IPSC style practical set up and invite every farmer and his mum you might have some questions to answer.

Looking at getting a small range so I can practice my Cowboy Action Shooting. Mainly just me so not every farmer and his wife. May be a couple of friends occassionaly. So will be personal use, no commercial use.

I think building regs and planning permission would be required and maybe a change of use. However, I am looking at the negative side.

I am about to find myself in exactly this position (small farm of circa 50 acres).

As a prelude, I have already sought some planning advice... and have been advised that any type of engineering works such as building a berm or backstop would require planning. This will however be in an AONB, so your position may well be different.

I am exploring temporary options....

within the area we are talking about we have 500 acres, and is not AONB. So hoping we can sort this out with any formal permission. Trying to minimise the red tape!
