work bench gun vice 'advice'

Curious if anyone has a recommendation. Im looking for a decent workbench vise there are so many to choose from. What sort of jaw width and throat depth would suffice?

In my case I have limited space, so dont have a large workbench in garage. Been looking at Stanley they have light duty bench model whihc I like, but not sure if the throat depth and clamping capacity would be feasible, let alone the fact that it is a 'light' duty model.

I stated 'gun smithing' in commas, as what need for is bufffer tube removal on AR15 style rifle for example. Changing the forend ect...

I use an Irwin record No3 (4") as any everyday vice in the workshop and that is what i would recommend to everyone. Mine is on a stand to bring it to a reasonable height and is perfect for most needs.

Don't forget to buy some soft Jaws! The ones I use have button magnets with rubber faces. I believe these were draper and less than £10.

I have a 3" parrot vice, bit too soft for DIY / bashing on type use(but great for detail work filing etc) , but for clamping up guns, it's great as you can move it around in so many different ways. throw in a scotch brite pad, and it'll hold anything softly but firmly. plus you can take it off the bench if you want, leaving only a small stand,

Those rubber faces seem to keep coming unstuck on the two sets I have here.
Roofing lead folded to shape round the jaws works well and I use some old conveyor belt cut to shape.

Roofing lead, aluminium covers and ply inserts all help, this is one of my vices. I also have a knee vice with lead jaws and a couple of hefty machine vices, oh plus the 25ton pill press that I use as a vice on occasion plus a 36kg thing in the Bridgeport. You can never have too many vices :)
