By the plain meaning of the words "managing" and "wilding" are mutually exclusive activities.

The first is a hard reality and the latter a romantic flight of fancy, there are very good practical reasons why some species such as wolves have been hunted to extinction.

On the A9 north of Collieburn there is a large stone commemorating the killing of the last wolf in Sutherland in 1700 by trapper Polson. It was an event of such positive significance to the local community that they saw fit to celebrate and commemorate the event in stone.

I for one hope that Sutherland will be wolf free for at least another 319 years.

Of course to people like Packham the Highlands of Scotland is just some wildlife park for him to indulge his fantasies and feck the needs of the local people. Well they are only human and they no doubt come way down in his species pecking order.

Not sure if you watched the channel 4 piece, but what a shambles. If only BASC could put someone on screen that could get the presenters name right.....

Here in New Zealand we have Forest and Bird - or as we call them 'Twig and Tweet'. Same level of pure ideological b.s., and also the same pathological hatred of firearms. One hopes they would be amongst the first against the wall, come the revolution. Sadly though, given the ratio of 'sheeple' to real people, I doubt we'll ever get the evolution. Pity, as one seems to be very much needed.

Me and a Swedish colleague were discussing this yesterday and I was explaining that we have to cull deer because they have no natural predator here any more and plenty of food so their population gets out of control. He said they had a similar problem with a few animals in Sweden so they reintroduced Wolves which naturally culled the population of other animals. And he said they never get wolf attacks because (much like countryside foxes in England) they are scared of humans. However, they have now started getting a bit over populated and have started venturing into towns where they are not scared of humans (again much like town foxes in England).

He also said that everyone in the towns is against the hunting of them to reduce numbers right up until the point where they arrived in the towns and then suddenly they want them gone! Funny that....

Which is effectively why they were hunted to extinction in this country in the first place. Out in nature - fine - close to humans - less so.
