I honestly think the type of person who would happily break into someone's house or car (and there's plenty of those), or give someone a good kicking just for the fun of it, would be sorely tempted to get a firearm if it was simply a matter of walking into Asda, or online.................and I think that would be very bad thing.
FAC holders, on the other hand, have already been positively vetted, or so we are led to believe, and it doesn't surprise me that a few on this forum seem quite indignant that they can't enjoy the same perceived freedoms in this country as in the US and Czech Republic. (I've not been to either, so I can't offer any opinion about how safe I felt.)
Nothing is going to change anytime soon, and when it does, you won't be able to do anything about it no matter how loud you shout, or who you vote for, so I suggest you chill out and enjoy what you've got while you can.......
As for me, I'm off to start reloading 6BR.........

Hang on a minute......I think the majority of us are talking about a carry permit, which could be attached to an existing firearms certificate as an extra section after undergoing additional training etc, not just giving everyone "a right" and handing out guns like sweets!.
There is no requirement here for extra or any firearms training, for civilians that do carry a firearm.

Interesting post on Facebook today:

Australian Gun Law Update;
Here's a thought to warm some of your hearts....
From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia
Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real
figures from Down Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own
government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria.....alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!)
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady
decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.

Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns....'

You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information.

The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.
Take note Americans, before it's too late!
Remember, we're all here because we're not all there!

Come on Pete, no one is saying it should be as easy as walking into Asda or buying a Glock on-line!!!, that's just a ridiculous statement!......have you thought about writing for the tabloids as that's the sort of statement they'd come out with!.

You can't even walk into Walmart and buy handguns - never seen them in their stores. Not in Ohio or Washington. I like to think you can in Texas but you probably can't.
There's still the background check to be done, regardless.
I have seen some budget rifles, shotguns, and ammunition. LOTS of air rifles and cheap scopes.

If I understand the law correctly, an SGC holder even now has the right to posses an unloaded shotgun in public.....
So, Sec2 Mossberg 500 over the shoulder with a couple of buck shot cartridges in the pocket while having a stroll around town anybody?

I would not want to put it into practice. I shoot in a syndicate and we do, on occasion, park up on public roads and walk down to drives, some keep guns bagged and others have them broken and under the arm. Regardless, it is always done as discreetly and quickly as possible and that is in the wilds of the Lincolnshire Wolds.
