15000 round barrel life....... loads of wear left in it!ovenpaa wrote:Plus a new barrel after that lot........
Considering the M60 was the staple GPMG of the US military for decades, US Ordnance have lost out big time to FN as the Mag 58 and Minimi have comfortably replaced it......... it could be too late for the improvements made to the M60.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Re: Got a Spare £425
Hmmm
Not bad I suppose..
Almost as good as the Spandua M42 was It??
Imagine having to manpack the Ammo for it though???
I have manpacked the GPMG in the SF ROLE with all your personal kit, the SF Kit, your personal weapon plus 750rnds of 7.62mm ball Link in your bergen,,,,,and its quite heavy,,especially going up hill!!
And the Army want to know why ,I in my latter years, am now experiencing back, knee and ankle problems??? :? :?

Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!

Re: Got a Spare £425
That takes me back. I heaved a GPMG about in a former life but don't remember having that sort of ammunition quantity available. The man behind the M60 must've had some serious shakes after that lot.
Can't imagine MOD would be too enamoured at having their mantlets chewed up like that!

Re: Got a Spare £425
From my own experiance the M60 was crap. I much preferred the GPMG (aka MAG 58 in Aust).
Stripping and cleaning was dreadful and the barrel change was the stuff of nightmares. :x
Zeroing was nigh on impossible - we just learnt to aim off!
As a machine gun it made a good anchor.
