I was up in Kharg Island in the early 70's; not much of a place but the people were OK and you could get a drink there. Anyone else been to the Zoo at Kharg?? ;)

It was a similar story in Baghdad and Kabul at one time, in fact the Daily Fail got it wrong as the photo they showed as being Iranian is actually of Afghani college girls in Kabul in the early 70's......

My first (of several) visits to Kharg was when I was serving on the BP tanker "British Queen" in the spring of 1966. We were sent there to represent BP for a the opening, by the Shah of Iran, of a new oil terminal there. I was there later on the 200,000 ton Shell tankers.

Can't recall ever going further than the Seamans Mission for a game of ping-pong and a couple of beers served out of a galvanised tin bath with a few ice cubes floating in it.

Came home a month later to face the long seaman's strike and read about the trial of the moors murders.
