CWGC Esbjerg (Fourfelt) Cemetary

#1 Post by Ovenpaa »

We wanted to visit Esbjerg CWGC last time over but time was against us so this time we found the time and the place and spent an hour or so walking round in quiet contemplation and I thought I would share some of my typically poor pictures.

The Danes buried at Fourfelt, these included Seafolk, Freedom fighters and Fishermen killed in English waters

Some of the Commonwealth graves, behind the hedge are German war graves

One thing that struck me was how many German graves are doubled up, also there were a lot of East European names, conscripts maybe? Also a significant number were German women.

An unknown Russian rests within the Commonwealth soldiers.

So many Germans died in Denmark, not all were known and Fourfelt seems to be the last resting place for many more Germans than Commonwealth soldiers.

A final sad note, the Germans took to clearing murders, retaliation for the actions of the freedom fighters, these three Danes were a pastor, a Doctor and a newspaper editor.

Dave..
One thing that struck me was how many German graves are doubled up,
Some photos of the German Cemetery at Langemark close to Ypres. Here there are examples of multiple burials.

There is one grave containing the remains of close on 25,000 unidentified soldiers. Known as the Kameraden Grab. (comrades grave)

The difference between CWG cemeteries is marked, ours with the white Portland stone the Germans dark and normally with Oak trees (Germanys national tree)

I am reading about the Somme at the moment, some of the most distressing statistics I have ever seen. It has also reminded me of some details I had forgotten such as the death of Kitchener.

Hawthorne No. 2 cemetary in the Newfoundland Park. Made my first 'pilgrimage' to Arras in August.
