Hobbyist bench to band saw for wood.

#1 Post by dromia »

Looking for a bench top band saw for light occasional use cutting wood up to 4" thick.

Will need plenty of safety features as it it is for the wife and her spoon making/wood carving.

She has all the tools already but struggles to cut down the stock to workable sizes.

Any one got one lurking they want shot of or can give me a recommendation

Band saws and safety don't really go hand in hand

I got my small bandsaw from Aldi they have them on offer every now and then. Screwfix do one for about £110. Depends how much you want to pay. Ebay is another source.

We have a large vertical Startrite bandsaw and 6" is about as far as I would push it and that is slowly. Even 4" is quite a lot to hack your way through. Can it be a bit smaller? The one I used to cut the wood for you guys was a 4" horizontal bandsaw and far more manageable.

Saw, really no pun intended, that one but not available for delivery or click and collect locally.

I'm not a fan of Screwfix anyway and this is just another example of why. Helpful as ever they say "choose another Product" FFS why should I do that if this is the one that I want? Why on god's earth should I fecking buy something I don't want, twats!

She is using mainly cherry, ash, alder, holly, rowan, pear, yew, apple, birch, hawthorn, willow, hazel, damson, blackthorn etc all from our own woodland thinnings and prunings. She isn't too keen on the coniferous as the wood is more open. Easier to carve when green. She likes to look for features in the grain, knots and the like and work with them.
