First rifle purchase advice!

#1 Post by Hixus »

So my FAC has returned with pleasing results but I’m lost in which rifle to invest in.

I’m looking for a 6.5mm creedmoor which i can learn my craft in my club 200yds indoor.. and then take it to 500yds plus. Target shooting only.

I’ve looked at a range of different types with all reasonably good reviews.

I’m falling more towards an out the box set up instead of a build.

Any advice given would be greatly appreciated.

Bergara B14 HMr
Howa 1500 varmint barrel
Remington 700 ( would require a trigger and stock change etc..
So ideally looking at alternatives)

The ones I’ve looked at so far, I’ve shot the Remington but not the others of yet..

Cheers

Wow, 200 yards full bore indoors! Wish we could manage that at our club.

why 6,5 for such a short range ? 30 cal would do the job and be cheaper if you are buying ammo

Howa at the lower price end of out of the box precision rifles, Ruger and Tikka at the upper end, with Bergara, Sabatti and Remington and the like sitting in the middle
I had a similar dilemma not too long ago and none of them stand head and shoulders above any other. So I went on fit and what it looked like and ended up with a Remington 700 in a AB arms chassis, which I'm very pleased with.
The only downside with my chassis is that it has a full length, full coverage handguard and I had to get very high scope rings to stop the scope fouling the upper picatinny rail. This was compounded with a 20moa rail

I would have to apply for a variation for the .30 and my ideal situation was to get one rifle that I can get to grips with in the club then work towards getting myself to bisley.

Tfb that’s where I’m struggling as if I opted for the rem 700 adl I would want to change the stock to ideally the grs bifrost replace the heavy pull trigger then a detach mag, whilst the bergara is ready straight out the box.
And then the howa in the mix as it’s more financial viable in which I can replace the stock to say a grs beserk straight of the bat ..
I’m browsing for decent second hand but would consider new..

It’s confused me a bit so I’m sticking with my LBP untill I can make up my mind

Depending on the style of rifle you like, the new Remington 700 PCRs get good press,

26" varmint barrelled Howa with GRS stock(personally having used both I prefer the Bell and Carlson stocks but YMMV) or the aussi precision stock, add the mag system and a scope and there you are fixed to shoot, the Howa "dream it build it" allows you to spec the rifle rather than having to buy and discard bits, the triggers are good from the box, and spring kits for them are less than £20 if you feel the need.

6.5 hope you are planning on making your own ammo sometimes hard to find, hopefully will become more available with it becoming more popular, Sabatti are pretty good, tikka or I bought a Lithgow and they do 6.5.
