I've never had a single issue with any of the brands I have shot.

there are still occasional reports of split ammo, but as long as you check for split necks and stop shooting if it "sounds funny" then you should be OK, lots of people still shooting .17HMR, I know of at least a couple of people who have shot out more than one HMR barrel without problems, of course I know 2 people who have had blowups and several who always carry a cleaning rod to knock out the stuck bullets :p
the .22WMR is gaining in popularity again, and ammo doesn't seem to be a problem for it, just a thought.

A local rfd to me has a casing in their shop for one that blew up and embedded shrapnel in the shooters hand and face. Put me right off this calibre

How long ago? I know of issues when 17 HMR first came out. I've had trouble getting HMR ammo for about 8 month. It's now coming back to kent (North at least!) I picked up 800 rounds last week. Last August whilst on a shooting holiday a shot 1200 rounds of HMR with no issues.
