Can't personally stand bore snakes as the more you use them the more contamination you are going to pull into your barrel before it then cleans it!
I use a patch on a one Piece Teflon coated rod with a bore guide and only do that if I notice an accuracy problem.
As the old saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it!
I've always found Napier and Birchwood Casey solvents work well but then Automotive Brake cleaner also does the trick. Once clean I always give everything a wipe over with some light gun oil.

I used to shoot .22 prone with a Walther KK200. It got cleaned after every shoot, regardless of how many rounds went through it. PH009 to clean and a light Napier gun oil to finish and protect. Dry patch through before next use. Personally, I hate bore snakes as all it does is spread dirt about, especially where you don't want it.
I never had any need to use a fouling shot and firmly believe the first couple of shots ready the shooter, not the rifle.
I still have my Ruger 10/22 but have otherwise moved over to fullbore now.

I use Froglube solvent and CLP on my semi-auto rimfire bolt assembly.
Otis pull through on a rare occasion I pull a patch up the bore.

Re: What solvent or cleaner?
I put a dry patch through the barrel of my Morini CM84E after each shooting session and use Bisley Bore Cleaner and patches through the barrel every few months when I also clean around the breach and extractor with cotton buds. Is it necessary, I am not sure, but I get pleasure handling my pistols and rifle so do it anyway.

I use garlands to degrease / clean and clenzoil CLP to lubricate plus high temp grease (very small quantity on charging handle and BCG slides).

I use carb cleaner spray and a tooth brush around the breach and whatnot. I only clean the barrel after the comp season is done. It just doesn't shoot as accurately if I do. I've no explanation for that. It's noticeable though.
A quick once over with 009, follow up with a patch or three, and a further lightly oiled patch for storage.
