Custom Ruger 96/44

#1 Post by markd290 »

I came across this on YouTube

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KcHH24yKNn4

Its been modified by a UK based shooter with 10 round mags, folding stock, pistol grip and custom lever. I have to say, if Ruger came out with something like this I'd snap one up

That was very good! Not as popular as they could be here, and I reckon that’s because of the four round standard mag capacity. Nice job.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I totally agree, the 4 round mag really holds the rifle back. With 10 rounds of .44 mag it becomes a far more practical rifle, especially when modernised a bit like the one in the video.

Somebody needs to get onto Ruger about this, I reckon they'd sell quite a few!

Can't entirely agree with you there unfortunately. Yes without any doubt it was a major failing of Ruger to only bring this rifle out with a 4 rounds magazine. However if they were to change that now it would still only have a limited appeal as in the U.S. there are much better alternatives available and here in the U.K. the market is so small and limited that we are inconsequential.

Tongue firmly in cheek I will admit to being seriously impressed by what the guy has done though at no doubt great expense, but still it is just a basic bog standard Ruger dressed up underneath all the Gucci goodies. You could even say that not only has he polished a turd but has also gold plated it if you were unkind.

If he's happy with the result that's all that counts as he clearly is enjoying his rifle and that's what it's all about. The conversion of the magazine is simply genius.

That guy was on a US forum a few years back.
IIRC the mags cost about £200 each.
I did think about getting the Ruger 96 as they are quite cheap to buy.
Gun for £350 and a couple of mags total cost £750.
Compare to any other GR rifle and its not too bad price wise.

yeah he's got a vid up on the mags if you look, says about £150. looks like he's never replied to any comments asking about them either. you'd think if he isn't bothered about making them, that he might put up a link to the design so people can make them. £150 for a custom mag isn't awful, I paid over £100 for a factory P7m8 magazine
