6.5mm Creedmoor difference to 5.5mmx55?

#1 Post by Simont303 »

Hi

What is the performance difference between 6.5mm Creedmoor and 6.5x55mm rounds?

I have 6.5x55mm and really like the performance and faily shallow trajectory.

For the same bullet and speed no difference at all, the perceived advantages are shorter action, more choice in factory loading as the creed more doesnt have to allow for 100 year old weaker actions

Once the bullet leaves the barrel there should be no difference. A 140 grain bullet travelling at 2800fps is a 140 grain bullet travelling at 2800fps.

Laurie Holland has written just about all you need to know in TargetShooter magazine.

Here's a link to the first in the series:

The short answer is not a lot, particularly when firing the 6.5x55 in a modern rifle.

That’s a great article.

I live shooting the sweede, after months of lockdown on to the range and hitting high scores straight off.

Reading the replies it sounds like there is not a great deal of difference between my existing 6.5mm and the 6.5 mm creedmoor other than the latter being more modern with shorter bolt travel.

I’m very inclined to upgrade but not sure if I will be able to use my existing cases and dies.

You wont be able to use your 6.5x55 cases in a 6.5 Creedmoor. Your 6.5x55 dies wont work for re loading the Creedmoor either.

Thank you, that’s a nice and clear answer.
