I've added a letter extract from the Morning Chronicle (London), Monday 14 May 1855, to the Research Press blog.

Life in a Crimea Rifle Pit

It provides an interesting first hand account of life in a rifle pit during the Crimean War. Of particular note is the long range marksmanship with the then newly issued Enfield rifle, together with comment on shooting in conjunction with a spotter whilst firing upon gunners.

It was very "matter of fact" - something which still continues today and is hard to explain. I've got all the mail I sent home from the first Gulf - I hope my kids find them of interest in years to come.

My dissertation is mostly based on letters home and interviews conducted by the IWM, certainly there is a matter of factness about pretty much all of them and they're sourced from over 50 individuals
