Was doing (badly) a two shot test last week where I shot off a bench. No rests were allowed and the only thing allowed to touch the bench is elbows.
Being used to shooting with a match sling it was horrendous how much the rifle was swinging about without any kind of sling. Managed one 9 followed by a miss...not good.
Any tips? I was thinking of maybe bending the rules and sitting at 90 degrees to the rifle so that the rifle rests on my left elbow, and I have a super-low position albeit at 90 degrees to the rifle. I won't get a chance to practice for a couple of weeks, so I'd like to get the position sorted and not waste anytime when I get there.
Any thoughts?

I sit at 45 deg and have my forearm vertical to the rifle, works for me.
The above post probably contains sarcasm or some other form of attempted wit, please don't take it to heart.

Re: Shooting off a Bench (no rest)
What was the distance / target size / rifle type?
Re: Shooting off a Bench (no rest)
100yds, static deer (so 6 inch target), tikka t3 in .308.
Charlotte, I think the left arm thing is spot on, I think I mean more like 90degrees to the rifle now I think about it...

Depending on the rules you should be able to use a 2 point sling?
The best ones for this competition is a Springfield pattern as this has 2 attachment points but lets you use it like a single point sling.
