That is very nice. Are rolling blocks a good place to start for 'old' rifles? I would very much like to shoot one at some stage but have no idea what to look for calibre or manufacturer wise.

Any pointers on the subject?

Ovenpaa......big subject !!!

There are dozens of different calibres, most are in the 11mm (or .43") range.

The Danish one shown comes in a variety of calibres from 11.7X51R down to 11.7X35R, mine is the latter.

This is quite easy to load, case are available from Henry Krank, which I then trim down, bullets I use are 350grn gas check .457" (for the 45/70) I use Andy Allwood's cast bullets. I use the 45/70 Govt dies to size the cases, just a little at a time until I can chamber them, then I fire form with a smaller .451" bullet. I then use the 45/70 dies to neck size and seat the bullets. Just about 50 grains of blackpowder does the trick.

.43" Spanish is quite common and easy to load for, so is the American 50/70 govt.

Give it a go, the superb rifles and well worth the effort.

Get the book "Remington Rolling Block Miltary Rifles and Carbines of the World" by George Layman....an excellent, if a bit expensive, book.
