Ammunition safe on top of gun safe?

#1 Post by Blair_Mc »

Awaiting contact from the police regarding my FAC application and I happened to find a small and very cheap ammunition safe. I was wondering if the Firearms folk would consider it more secure to place it on top of my gun cabinet (that has some internal ammunition storage itself) or beside it? Would it even matter as long as its bolted to the wall?

You should be fine with a separate ammunition cabinet although I doubt they consider one or the other more secure. I always bolt mine to each other as well as a floor and wall.

Mine is well away from the gun safes.

Thanks for the replies.

I see the benefit of keeping ammunition away from the guns but finding discreet space to place it in is a problem for me. On top or next to my gun safe is ideal, and there seems to be no issues with it being looked upon as less secure.

That's certainly how I've done it for the past thirty years - old handgun safes bolted to the top of my cabinets and to the wall. Never, ever been questions about the security of it. Indeed, cabinets all bolted to each other and the wall would be bloody difficult to carry away with all that bulk and combined weight even if the wall were sledge hammered down.

I have two old pistol safes fitted above two rifle cabinets, never been an issue.

My old pistol safe was built in to an interior brick wall.I removed bricks, inserted safe and re pointed the bricks. And despite it being a movie cliche.........I put a picture frame on a hinge concealing it.

The picture frame held a vintage ammunition advert :-)

Couldn't manage to lift mine onto top of Gun safe, so bolted it to the concrete floor. ;)
