Arisaka Type 99 Long

#1 Post by PeterN »

When the 7.7x58mm Arisaka Type 99 rifle was first introduced it was made as a long infantry rifle in the style of the previous Type 38. It wasn't long before they realised that that style of rifle was outdated and they changed to the intermediate length of rifle instead of having a long infantry rifle and a carbine for rear echelon troops. They made almost 40,000 of the Type 99 long rifles. This one is from the Toyo Kogyo factory series 35. This factory made about 30,000 and the Nagoya factory made just over 8,000. The chrysanthemum has been ground off and it is missing the monopod and dust cover. It has some marks in the wood. Someone once suggested it looked like someone had tapped the stock with a saw leaving tooth marks, but who knows what really caused it?
The rear sight is different from the intermediate rifle and have range markings to 1700 metres instead of 1500 metres and the anti aircraft arms are shorter and fatter and notched top and bottom with a 1, 2 and 3 marking. A few pics. These could be better and were taken a few years ago now.

A rifle that you don't see very often.
